Though in its infancy, mass customization has been limited to extruded and/or "cookie cutter" designs cut out of sheet goods with cnc technology. For my thesis, I wanted to explore the inherant challenges and opportunites of mass customization. The first challenge; mass customization's answer to molded, highly standardized office and lounge chairs.
The dna seating system combines a dynamic process with pre-fab components to offer the consumer body specific seating. The user can input their own anatomically specific dimensions into the model including seat height, armrest height, and lumbar support height and depth. The user can also select from three base options including task chair, side chair, and lounge chair and then preview their chair online. The four plywood pre-forms are then custom trimmed, assembled using the dna bracket, and the chair is delivered to the consumer for a body specific seating solution ready to sit right out of the box.

I would sit in this 10 hours a day - as a designer who sits at my desk about that much or more each day the fact that it would be custom fit to my body makes me want one of these for my home and my office. I doesn't matter what the materials are, good design is good design and this chair proves that. I'm not sure where this school of thought came from that said that office chairs had to be ugly, overstuffed ass pillows. I applaud this designer for pushing the preconceived notions we have about an the often overlooked realm of office furniture and truly embracing the possibilities of mass customization.

This doesn't say what the materials are but even if the 1/4 inch white layer is the most advanced foam, nobody's going to sit in this 8 hours a day.

I love this chair - it is my favorite one on this site. The hexagonal dna shaped bracket is a creative and intelligent design choice. Kudos for actually designing a piece with mass customization as the focus. I am so over the flat, boring, "cookie cutter" shapes that are trendy right now. This is a smart, sophisticated, timeless piece.

Beautiful...it is very unique and it is nice to see something that has been pushed beyond just the minimal design like everything else on this site. Thank you for really thinking about what mass customization truly is and the best way to utilize that technology in today's furniture market.

This is a very handsome chair that is very well thought out. I think the designer does an excellent job of addressing the issue of mass-customization of the molded form chair. Interesting proposal.

Well thought out and designed. This is the perfect solution for mass customization - the fact that it can truly be customized to the point of being body specific is quite unique.

I can tell that each component has been well researched and thought out. The obvious detail to both form and function really set this design apart from the rest. Finally someone who gets it - this person actually understands what mass customization is all about. Amazing - this design sets itself apart from everything else on this site. I can definitely tell the amount of thought and true design intelligence that went in to developing this beatiful piece.
