Princess Anne Bedside Table

The Princess Anne is inspired by classic Queen Anne furniture elements. The modern take on the piece adds pizzazz to a recognizable style. This piece is designed with mass customization in mind, allowing the customer to choose from a variety of antique or classical elements that he/she likes and using them to create a unique and custom piece for each client. This concept is not limited to bedside tables but has also been applied by the designer to desks, chairs, and shelving using CNC routing and/or laser cutting as primary method for production.

Love it! it certainly caught

Love it! it certainly caught my eye, and thats the reason why I clicked on it in the first place... because it's DIFFERENT!!! If it were sucky and ugly I wouldn't have looked at it.

I thoroughly enjoy the crispness, the cleanness of it's appearance.. even though modern Karim-Rashid followers might turn their nose at Queen Anne architecture and furniture, I think this might give someone like that a good reason to rethink their feelings.. This table has strong design elements – rather modern if I might add – and would fit in very well in my own Queen Anne home. May I have it?

This looks like someone

This looks like someone trying to cash in reeaaallly late on this trend. Give it up people, it's over.
Plus, the burnt edges left by the laser cutter are a common design student faux-pas. This design took very little thought or ingenuity, not to mention craftsmanship...

I would agree with

I would agree with Jameson’s closing comment about this being a trend that has not necessarily found its niche in the market. I think this is because it sits on a line between hand made furniture or craft and modern manufacturing technologies. Much of its perceived value originates in the piece it is trying to mimic. We can’t tear ourselves away from seeing it as part antique and part plywood shapes. We’ll always see it as a conglomeration between the two and that is what makes this style so interesting and unique to me, as well as the reason why it is hard to categorize it as art or furniture.

Anonymous, in response to your comment regarding the burnt edges, I like them and so have others who have viewed this piece though I agree that I could probably add more value and a more professional or finished appeal to the piece if I were to paint the entire thing or remove the burning on the edges. I’m in the process of assembling another so that I can experiment with edge and surface treatments.

“This looks like someone

“This looks like someone trying to cash in reeaaallly late on this trend.” < This is your personal opinion and not a reflection of the current market or industry.

If you look at recent events in the design industry you’ll notice that Knoll recently began producing a Queen Anne inspired set designed by Robert Venturi, IKEA released images of a period piece set that consists of silhouettes similar to the piece above that they say will be on shelves in early ’09, the company Italamp just revealed their new silhouette period pieces at Miason & Objet in Paris along side Zaha Hadid’s new chandelier collection, Brocade is company that produces pieces entirely based on this style design and manufacturing – they have a large selection and are doing very well for themselves, and the most well known example is probably Urban Outfitters who has been, and still is, producing designs with this motif. Designers are currently popping out of the woodwork with similar period inspired pieces like Won J. Heo who recently showed at the Seoul Design Festival and New York based Chris Collicott is now marketing his LED mini-chandelier.

These are just a few examples of this continued trend, probably a trend still in its infancy or in a transitional stage where it has been too expensive in the past but is now becoming more reachable by a larger pulic.

I like the design, even if it looks on the first glimpse as nothing new, it is really special!
I like the play with the black and brighter wood, if I were a princess I would definitely choose this as my night table! Looks probably also gorgeous with a table cloth and a lamp.
Go on!!

Asthecically this is nothing

Asthecically this is nothing new, it is simply an old design programed into a new construction technique. However laser cutting is not new, and the asthetic value of laser scribed traditional and antique lines is very tired. It seems that Mass Customization could allow for much more exploration into form and the story that could be told with this object.

It is true that not every design has to try and tell a story, but regardless, they all inherently do.

formal yet modern, simple

frank, thanks for

frank, thanks for commenting. the piece actually creates very little waste because all the pieces puzzle together nicely on a 2' x 4' piece of plywood. i was planning to include an image of this though this site does not allow me the capability to update the images i've posted or add additional ones. if you leave your email i would be more than willing to send you the layout. The waste in this design is very minimal and i chose to use E1 grade plywood because E1 contains less than 5% formaldehyde content in the adhesive, making this grade plywood recyclable and reusable in another products life.

Creative use of a classic

Creative use of a classic style in a design that appears well suited for mass production. The contrasting edges gives this a more modern feel. The checkerboard edges add a touch of whimsy. One can easily picture this in a childs room decorated in an Alice in Wonderland theme or as part of a bedroom set belonging to a 20 or 30 something professional. The piece has "fun" written all over it.
