Modern Vanity - Functional Storage

The design for this vanity stemmed from my frustrations in searching for a modern vanity that had any storage space. The entire piece was constructed of basic red oak lumber and red oak veneer plywood with a 2x infrastructure using standard shop tools. It was stained with multiple coats of an espresso finish stain and then sprayed with a top coat to seal it up. The top is suspended from the sides by short steel rods and holes are cut in it for the sink and faucet. The bottom of the vanity contains what I call "storage coves" that each hold a roll or rolls of toilet paper in the back and then a towel or wash cloths rolled up in the front. This turned out to be the perfect storage solution to make up for not having a linen closet and the towels are able to act as a design element rather than looking like something that has to be there. The design can be modified with an enclosed front if desired and just about any type of storage configuration can be built into this vanity by making only minor modifications to the design plans. The top is versatile enough to fit a wide variety of sinks and faucets that someone might want to use. It was the first piece of furniture attempted by the amateur craftsman and I don't think I've ever seen anything so perfect. All in all this design ended up turning into a practical piece of modern furniture that has character and is unique.
Throughout the process of
Throughout the process of working with the designer, there was no question as to exactly what was desired for this piece. The drawings, measurements, material choice, color choice, and design elements given for construction were thought out with great detail. The designer took the time to make sure that all elements of designs were clear, so I knew exactly what the end product would look like. The designer effectively captured her vision of the piece with drawings. In addition, through reviewing the plans with the designer, I knew that this would not just be another piece of furniture that could be just slapped together, but a piece that had a strong emotional tie to the designer. I have embraced the passion that the designer had for designing this piece and used that to construct it with the greatest of care. Every cut, dado, measurement, and even the finish on the wood of the piece just came together perfectly. Being an amateur craftsman with standard craftsman tools, I am very proud of how this piece came together. It was evident throughout the building process that the designer thought of every piece of this project very carefully so it could be constructed properly. It was also apparent to me that the design of this piece could be easily changed to accommodate anyone’s needs and desires. The design could be changed to have doors and/or drawers. The size of the vanity could be changed to accommodate any size bathroom or modified to include double sinks. Different materials could be used such as: other woods, the top could be marble, solid surface materials, laminates, etc. I am very proud of the designer and couldn’t be happier with the end product. It was an honor to work with the designer and to have the chance to build such a beautiful and functional piece.

Exposing the piping gives an elegant look to the piece itself. The placing of the storage cubicles is one-of-a-kind. Works well with bathrooms of limited space. Bravo! I look forward to what is next in your line of designs.

I feel that the cabinet
I feel that the cabinet itself is very diversified as it can be expanded to fit up to 2 or
more sinks, in relationship to size of bathroom.

Greatlooking vanity -- use of space is excellent and I like the open look. Great expresso color (not easy to find in stores) and would go great in contemporary home. Not enough of this type of design out there in the marketplace. Great Job.

Wow, I really give props to the designer. The piece has a strong modern look with a lot of functionality (hard to find!!). I can see many areas where customization would be easy. For myself I would suspend a dark marble top to hold the sink; this could bring this piece up to the next price point with relatively little modification. Great job! Can’t wait to see what the designer comes up with next.

this piece conforms to the theme of this site no more than any other hand built custom piece of furniture, which by definition doesn't really lend itself to MASS customization.
its a beautiful piece, i'd love to have it my home, but like some other entries i don't think it is really fits into the spirit of the competition
I disagree that this piece
I disagree that this piece could not lend itself to mass customization. I think that given the design and the way that it was put together there is not reason that it couldn't be created using the materials and techniques for mass customization. Agreed that it wouldn't be a hand built custom piece of furniture and not as high quality...this was just shown for design purposes. The design and idea could easily translate into something that could be mass produced and distributed and even more, it could be somewhat customizable by the end user which is unlike any other type of mass produced pieces that I have seen out there lately, especially in the modern realm.

This piece applies because
This piece applies because it can be constructed of many different pieces that can be engineered to fit together looking like it was built as one entire piece. It is a flexible design in that different options can be selected by the user and carried out by them as well. I think it is innovative in it's design and it's a piece that is actually functional as well as beautiful and it provides the user with more than just a sink as faucet as so many of the modern vanities only do. This would work for mass customization...I am confident.
