Display/Conceal Mirror

This mirror matches a bathroom vanity that I designed. I didn't want to have a beautiful bathroom vanity and then an ugly medicine cabinet above it, so I designed a mirror with some storage and display space. The design is essentially two squares that overlap to create the mirror space and then the additional space on the top, bottom and sides. The entire piece was constructed by an amateur craftsman using standard shop tools and basic solid red oak lumber. It was stained with multiple coats of an espresso finish stain and then sprayed with a top coat to seal it up. Doors with hinges were added to the right and bottom openings to provide some concealed storage for bathroom essentials while the left and top spaces were left open to hold some decor pieces. A standard piece of mirror was cut to fit the inside space and is recessed into the frame so that the entire piece fits flush against the wall. Holes were drilled in the doors and standard cabinet handles were added. It turned out to be a perfect compliment to the matching vanity and a functional modern piece with a lot of style.

In building the vanity
In building the vanity mirror to match the vanity I have notices the same passion and attention to detail that I have seen in the plans for the vanity. The designer has taken great care in the design of this piece to make sure it was fully functional. It was also apparent that the design could be easily changed to fit anyone’s needs or desires. The vanity mirror came out exceptionally well mostly in part due to the designer’s planning attention to detail. Please also see my comments on the vanity labeled “Modern Vanity”.

Very very cool and unique! I love the function of it. I really like the how the proportions of the voids relate to each other. And I REALLY like the color. (always have been partial to dark colors though. :) ) Just a couple questions - (1) what are the actual dimensions of this piece? and (2) will something like this ever be up for sale or are you hoping a furniture manufacturer will pick it up? (you can answer my questions via e-mail if you don't want to divulge the specifics on this site.)
I love the mirror and vanity
I love the mirror and vanity look together. I have looked at a few contemporary designs, but either they are way too expensive or not in the great expresso color and simple style that your mirror and vanity are. I would consider purchasing this set for my bathroom if it were available. It would be a great look for lofts too.

This is a very nice design
This is a very nice design incorporating form and function. Not just a mirror, but not just a shelf. Makes standing in front of the mirror fun while eliminating the old medicine cabinet on the wall.

Should look great with the vanity! Are the metal cylinders on top lights? The inset mirror creates a nice edge for setting things and also the large storage areas are great for anyone that has ever lived with a woman! Again, all in a clean modern design. Great job.
No, the metal cylinders on
No, the metal cylinders on the top are not lights...they are just brushed steel candle holders that I found that seemed to go nice up there. The reflections are from the lighting above the mirror. It is a Robert Conneman fixture with stainless steel rods that mimic those holding the suspended vanity top that matches this mirror.

This applies because it is a
This applies because it is a simple piece yet intricate in it's construction, dimensions and details. I think it is a great product for the theme of mass customization and it's a piece that has more than beauty...it has functionality, unlike so many modern pieces of furniture these days. It's furniture that looks expensive but with mass customization can be brought to a much broader range of design oriented individuals at a price they could actually afford and it is something that is unique.

Keeping the basis of the
Keeping the basis of the design the same the consumer could select different materials, finishes, even play with the size of the unit, the mirror space vs. open space, they could select to add doors to all open spaces, keep all spaces open, etc. depending on what they need and desire out of the piece. Then the piece could be manufactured at the lowest cost to the consumer possible depending upon the materials selected, finish, etc. The connections based on the materials offered would be the most challenging thing in my mind to establish with this piece but once that was engineered then I see this as being an ideal piece for mass customization since costs can be kept down and the item can be customized by the consumer through the manufacturer to produce an end result that satisfies both parties.
