A laser-cut sheet metal leg structure is folded and mounted to a CNC routed wood seat. A laser-cut sheet metal back support is optional. Shipped flat, user assembled. Materials can be mixed for custom looks.

Dated and cheap. Maybe
Dated and cheap. Maybe sustainable for a flea market. Looks like plastic patio furniture. Boring.
i beg to differ.. anything
i beg to differ.. anything can look "dated" as everything new typically draws influences from something else that already exists. that's not really a well-thought out argument.
if anything, I believe this chair has clean lines, wastes little material and upholds many articles of sustainability.
I don't see anything that is
I don't see anything that is customizable about this piece. You can change the materials but that is it. Even though it can be shipped flat which is a great idea, the metal and wood would make it extremely expensive because of the weight.
Blu Dot ships it's metal and
Blu Dot ships it's metal and wood furniture all day long. Packed flat no less. I cannot believe that this item would be more expensive to ship than what said company does.
Flat packing furniture
Flat packing furniture decreases the shipping cube volume. That means more product in the same amount of space. This decreases the cost of shipping and decreases the carbon footprint caused by shipping. A key benefit of these manufacturing techniques is how well they lend themselves to sustainable design efforts.
The FoldedChair is designed for rapid manufacturing processes ( laser/cnc). This allows simple design changes to be made effortlessly without expensive tooling changes (say the legs are changed from a straight path to a "faux" neo-Victorian path). In addition, when the component nature of the FoldedChair is coupled with the material flexibility, the use becomes very ambiguous and suited for many environments.
