CASSIUS

CASSIUS, an interactive design interface, invites users to a virtual boxing match. Users compete with their computer-mouse against a 3D model of a punching bag. Virtual boxing gloves give blows on this bag and thus form a unique design object. On the basis of the readily adapted computer model, production data is generated instantly and transmitted to Fluid Forms' production facilities . 3D printers transform the virtual draft layer by layer into an exclusive piece of art.

triAngle Lamp

An inspiration of this lamp derives from a Christmas tree. The Christmas tree is always recognize as a symbol of wishes and happiness of the greeting season and is mostly placed in a corner of a room. Hence, this lamp was firstly design to well fit at a corner; however, the final design makes itself look good from any angel.

Additionally, this lamp was also design to be easily produced and assembled. By using an advantage of laser cutter, each part of the lamp is nicely create and ready to be assembled with no need of any tools. Moreover, in the front of the lamp are two layers of acrylic sheet that design for sliding decorating graphics in between these layers.

The concept of the graphics of the TriAngle Lamp is coming from the season change; therefore the graphic design represents the characteristic of 4 seasons by color and form: spring, summer, fall, and winter.

Warm Heart

The idea of this lighting design is to show the beauty between two elements: hard vs. soft, and warm vs. cold. I bended a metal sheet into the lovely shape I designed which is implying the hard material can be flaxable. Also, I chose the warm, yellow light bulb to balance the cold looking lamp shade in order to defined the beautiful balance point between two elements: cold and warm. In short, a cold looking lamp which has a warm heart.

prarie sconce

This sconce is made from one piece of walnut (the verticle) and one piece of mahogany (the horizontal), and the two pieces are simply glued together. The woods that are used to make this sconce are not primarily important. I have made another, smaller one in all mahogany. The sconce could be made of thick furniture grade plywood as well. What is imporatant is the shape of it which shapes the light it casts. The cuts and fit are thus also important. The horizontal piece, where the actual light bulb is is cut out ovaly (I used a hole saw in my drill press and slightly overlapped the cuts). The edges have a stepped square detail (stacked dato blades in the table saw worked well for me to make those cuts).
I think this sconce could be made much larger. It could be hardwired into a building's electric service too. I think it could fit well in large religious institutions, or into a home - just as well. The sconce can be made different ways, for different places it would go - made large or small, for hardwiring or plug-in use, of plywood or solid wood.
Its light shape is really great though. I made two of these, and at the time I didn't have the light shape in mind, just the object shape, but whenever I have turned on the light, I am warmed with the feeling of having created something with seridipity, and I am proud, and inspired.

Eclipse Lamp

Born out of the need to use energy efficient lighting but not wanting to display the
ugly bulbs associated with this, I created a light shade that hides the fitting and bulb
within the shape. Made in New Zealand from recyclable polypropylene plastic, the
warm glow from the different layers of material creates a spectacular array of patterns
available in a large range of colours. Being influenced by nature and living by the sea
all my life, the form took inspiration from the Nautilus seashell. Best of all, the lamp is
designed to hang from existing down light fittings commonly found in most homes.
You can fit it yourself and don’t need an electrician to wire it.

Rotating Candelabra

Basically my designs are hand drawn and terrible. But they evoke an idea of simplicity and usefulness. The rotating candelabra for instance. How many times have you seen your wife, mother, girlfriend go around the table to reach all the candles. It's kind of ridiculous. Basically it's purple teak on an oak or maple lazy susan. Just spin it, lift the glass hurricanes (or don't) and light. It's that simple. I hope you like it.
