Suger

The task of the furniture in the environment of a Gothic Cathedral is to create the correct setting for viewers of this monument, which can function as an important tourist attraction. Using a gothic window as a source of inspiration for creating contemporary urban furniture generates a direct link between the furniture and the cathedral. There is also an educational interplay between aesthetics and functionality with the lightness and alternative forms of construction for which the gothic style is known being found in the seat. The originality of the gothic style juxtaposed with the recognition factor in the seat will, consciously or unconsciously, bring out a beautiful image of a modern and alternative form of the gothic in anyone who stops to take an interest. The Suger seat also has the capacity to fit in within other gothic environments in view of the fact that the style is central to the design. In order to avoid falling into the traditional shape of the gothic window, it is austerely surrounded with the original style.
This design was part of a competition: http://www.parckdesign.be

flat pack bar stool

Four CNC cut plywood pieces, two ends and two center sections. Each section is held together with rod and spacers for easy assembly and disassembly. The seat back and seat are produced the same way, from CNC cut plywood and notched into the center sections. The edges of the outside pieces are painted red, or another desired color, to emphasize the cut shapes. Since the whole stool is CNC cut the lengths can be changed easily for a smaller chair, and the graphic breakup moved around for a change in style.

This design is based on a Lamella Barrel Truss. It can be made out of four different woods, Apple, White Birch, Eucalyptus (shown), and Purpleheart. The frame connects together with a glued finger joint at the corners. The truss ribs connect with a glued lap join and has a glue coated pin wedge in the middle of each. The ends of the truss ribs connect to the frame with a modified finger joint. Each of the legs connect to the truss via cut outs that hold the intersection joint , and a cap with cut outs that slides over the legs and is welded in place. The legs are made up of either polished or brushed stainless steel. The outside diamiter of the frame is five feet, and the ribs are spaced one foot from center of lap joint to center on lap join. The frame width is 8”-4” for the couch, 3’-4” for the chair and foot stool, and 5’-4” for the coffee table. Each frame is covered with a tension fabric stretched out to cover the curve. The coffee table has a pike of 1/2” thick glass on top of it.

Slotted Chair

The slotted chair is designed with simplicity in mind. The entire chair can be CNC machined out of a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood. Simple dowel construct allows the chair to be shipped flat and assembled on site by the end user. The chair could easily be scaled one dimensionally to create a bench or love seat.

Keyway System Set

In this mass customized furniture, the assembly is simple and easy. The parts simply slide into place using a dovetail groove to provide the best attachment possible. The dovetails are not covered up, they are shown on the end of the parts. This is done to show off the craftsmanship and quality that a dovetail stands for. Beyond the assembly and joints, the Keyway's dimensions are scalable to accommodate any need. Also, the main key, in the center of the table holding the legs in, can be changed out to fit different needs. You could have a raised key, to serve as a serving shelf; or it could be recessed from the table surface to create pockets; it could possibly even be a different material or combination of materials. The legs of the tables and chairs have a customizable insert, as well. It could be marbled wood, brushed metal, or even a piece of clear plastic with fibers or bamboo infused into it. The key and inserts offer the customized touch that makes this table stand apart from other scalable furniture, further enhancing the uniqueness of their furniture while still being mass produced.

The Director's Cut

Here is the updated version of the director's chair. The chair is made with ash plywood and brush stainless steel. It is designed for the home or office settings. The base of the chair always remains the same, but there are four options: three different chair back styles, with or without armrest, a cushion on the seat, cushion or mesh on the chair back. There is also a choice of three colors for the cushion or mesh materials. Three chair backs have the same connection. W-18" H-49"

Customize your own seating experience by attaching different base options to the L-shaped seat. Contour provides a variety of appendages to offer users different options toward the standard seating experience.
By removing two of the four steel rods, the user can quickly assemble the desired base or have armrests without having to deconstruct the entire chair.
Customize Contour further by choosing your desired lumbar support, color, leg options and seat width.

Omni multi-functional furniture

The omni is a multifunctional piece of furniture that works as a coffee table, seating, bookcase or bed base. It breaks down easily to a portable size and is made from sustainably farmed 18mm NZ Pine plywood. The inspiration for this prototype came from watching university students shifting out of their flats each November, only to return in February. Handling sofas, beds and other large furniture seemed a difficult task (especially if stairs were involved). Most shifts required a few people to help and a trailor to transport the furniture - very cumbersome!

A single omni works as a bookcase, coffee table or seat. Connecting two units together makes either a sofa or a regulation single bed base. A set of 4 or 5 units would represent all the furniture an individual needs - just the thing for mobile people living in smaller spaces!

It is envisaged this prototype will be put into production and added to my online store - www.vanilladesignstore.com. It is expected to retail for around $USD600 including shelving and the squab.

The Pocket Lounger

My design is called The Pocket Lounger. It got its name from the idea of having shelves and slots built into a bench/couch so that there was no need for end tables in a tight spot indoors or out. The lounger can be placed against a wall using the negative piece of plywood with a cushion, mounted to the wall behind the bench to be sat on upright. The negative rectangle slot in the middle of the lounger is a void for the customer to design their own shelves or even place their name or business name in. The depth and color is their choice as well, all relating to mass customization. The Pocket Lounger can be customized to the extent that each piece is unique to the customer and a one-of a kind piece of furniture.

Users can customize color and lengths. Additionally, customers can create personal "engravings" by having their marks laser cut into the steel, similar to engraving on a wooden park bench (fig.1).
