Top 5 Seating
Box Chair
Posted March 11th, 2008 by mikebfoy
At first I thought this design would suit young gamers who could pack up their gaming equipment in short order,(plenty of storage for console, controllers, software and other misc items) but I received feedback that indicated that this kind of concealable seating may have a much broader appeal. This is true for the older gamers who would rather keep their electronic hobby on the down-low. The chair is concealed within a 20" cube that can be fashioned to act as a side table, coffee table, or ottoman. The upholstered seat sits 11" off the floor and the high back hinges into position when the box is opened. The upholstered arms open to reveal CD storage and there is a large storage compartment under the seat that is accessed from the side of the box.(lockable for dorm environments) I also placed an amp, 2 speakers and a subwoofer with a IPOD dock and the fidelity is great. PARAHINGE chair / table
Posted March 12th, 2008 by Grunblau_BMO
My goal with this piece was to propose a chair using a hinge geometry I developed that could parametrically drive the overall design. Since a chair should directly relate to the body, hinge location would be set based on the specific dimensions of the user. These data points are placed in 3D space and then surfaces are made to blend to the intended associations. This technology can be applied to material to fulfill various functional requirements including tables and storage solutions.
This piece is shown nested on one 4’x8’ X 0.5“ sheet stock. A hinge system integrated into the overall geometry allows the laminations to be cut while in the folded position, taking full advantage of common line cutting.
This is a multi-use piece of furniture as it becomes a side table when folded.

Poster Chair
Posted March 5th, 2008 by mikebfoyHang this beautiful frame on the wall with your choice of poster (standard 2’X3’) and when guests arrive remove and unfold for a comfortable chair. The trick for a really comfortable chair is the back pivots out into position when the chair is unfolded so it feels like a regular chair with a extraordinary ability to fold flat within a poster frame. So seamless is the conversion from chair to poster frame that it almost impossible to know that it is anything else other than a poster frame when it is hanging on the wall. For most living in cramped home environments like apartments, condos, dorms, and town homes, having readily available extra seating that doubles as art makes allot of sense. Hang in an extra bedroom, hallway, or office so when being used their absence won’t be missed.

Embrace Bench
Posted January 30th, 2008 by Peter Chen
I like benches, especially the mid-century classic Nelson Bench. I love plywood, especially the edge quality of high grade multiply plywood. The Embrace is my tribute to the embodiment of form and material.
Designed to emphasize the inherent aesthetic of multi-layered plywood, the EMBRACE is the essence of structural purity. Each u-shaped leg is connected to the top via the two aluminium rods. The rods are captured in the holes of the leg and the c-shaped grooves on the bottom of the seat. The c-grooves “embrace” the rods, creating the structural system to lock all components together.
There are no other fasteners. Friction holds everything.

Omni multi-functional furniture
Posted March 19th, 2008 by Vanilla Design Store
The omni is a multifunctional piece of furniture that works as a coffee table, seating, bookcase or bed base. It breaks down easily to a portable size and is made from sustainably farmed 18mm NZ Pine plywood. The inspiration for this prototype came from watching university students shifting out of their flats each November, only to return in February. Handling sofas, beds and other large furniture seemed a difficult task (especially if stairs were involved). Most shifts required a few people to help and a trailor to transport the furniture - very cumbersome!
A single omni works as a bookcase, coffee table or seat. Connecting two units together makes either a sofa or a regulation single bed base. A set of 4 or 5 units would represent all the furniture an individual needs - just the thing for mobile people living in smaller spaces!
It is envisaged this prototype will be put into production and added to my online store - www.vanilladesignstore.com. It is expected to retail for around $USD600 including shelving and the squab.
